Home Improvement Ideas for Kitchens
As a contractor that specializes in home renovations, I do a lot of free consultations for clients. and spend a lot of time in their homes. One of the things I’ve found that is all too common is how complicated renovating a kitchen can seem to people that don’t understand what kind of work it will really take. To help clients get started on the planning, here’s a few home improvement ideas for kitchens.
Counter Space Is Key
There are all kinds of things to think about when planning for a new kitchen, but one that’s often overlooked is counter space. Improving the kitchen in just about any area – larger appliances, more appliances, larger cabinets, more cabinets – can take away from available counters and end up just making the whole thing feel cramped.
Take an inventory of all the surface you need in the kitchen, and then make sure to include that in the new plans. Having a new pizza oven is great, unless you don’t have enough space to make the pizza in the first place. If new appliances end up eating away at the existing counters, consider putting in an island to make up for it.
In Houston, there are a lot of sunny days and warm weather to take advantage of, so cook outs are less a tradition and more a way of life. It can be a hassle preparing food in the kitchen and dragging it all the way around the house to the grill, especially at a party where a lot of food is being served.
Newer houses are more often built with a door in the kitchen, but a lot of older houses tend to have them in more inconvenient places. Installing a sliding door in the kitchen makes backyard barbecues a simpler affair. Kitchens that don’t have the wall space can opt for an indoor/outdoor serving window, which is larger and easier to open than most kitchen windows to allow large platters of food to get passed through.
Brighten It Up
When it comes time to update the kitchen, consider lighter colors and open space. A kitchen is a place where the family gathers, and it should feel inviting. Lighten up the tiles, counter and cabinets to make it a room people like to be in.
